In this interview, a vasectomy client shares his experience of accessing services with MSI UK. He explains how he came to decide that this was the right path for him, acknowledging the taboo that can accompany the treatment and his own prior reservations. He also answers some of our FAQs from other people that are considering a vasectomy.

“It’s a responsible and effective option for long-term contraception, and many people, myself included, find peace of mind knowing they’ve taken control of their reproductive health.”

What made you decide to have a vasectomy?

When I made the decision to have a vasectomy, it was after careful consideration of my current family situation and future goals. I already have two wonderful children who bring immense joy and fulfilment into mine and my partners life. I realised that I want to dedicate all my energy (I’m 40 years old now), time, and resources to raising them to the best of my ability.

“By choosing to have a vasectomy, I am taking a proactive step to focus on the family I already have.”

Parenthood is a significant responsibility, and I want to ensure that I am fully present for my children, both emotionally and financially. By choosing to have a vasectomy, I am taking a proactive step to focus on the family I already have. It allows me to invest in their upbringing without the added uncertainty of potentially expanding our family further.

“Ultimately, the vasectomy was a way to affirm our commitment to providing the best possible life for our two children.”

This decision wasn’t made lightly—it involved discussions with my partner, understanding the long-term implications, and reflecting on our family’s needs and aspirations. Ultimately, the vasectomy was a way to affirm our commitment to providing the best possible life for our two children, ensuring that we can continue to give them all the love and support they deserve.

Could you describe your experience with our services?

My experience with your services has been outstanding and seamless from start to finish.

“The procedure itself was incredibly quick—about 10 minutes from start to finish.”

I was scheduled for a phone consultation, during which I answered several questions to ensure I was fully informed and prepared. After completing the consultation, I was promptly booked for surgery. I was thoroughly briefed on what to expect and what steps I needed to take leading up to the surgery day.

On the day of the surgery, I had a brief pre-op consultation before being taken to change into a hospital gown. The surgeon then escorted me to the theatre room. The procedure itself was incredibly quick—about 10 minutes from start to finish.

After the surgery, I was taken to a recovery room where I was provided with drinks, snacks, and a detailed aftercare package. The nurse clearly explained what I needed to do over the next 16 weeks to ensure a smooth recovery.

Overall, the entire process was efficient, professional, and reassuring, making what could have been a daunting experience feel straightforward and manageable.

Where are you in the vasectomy journey now?

I’m currently nearing the end of my vasectomy journey. I have just one more week before I need to send off a semen testing sample to confirm that the surgery was successful, fingers crossed!

Is there anything that stands out from the treatment?

For me, one of the biggest positives was just how quick and painless the surgery turned out to be. As I mentioned earlier, the entire procedure took only about 10 minutes from start to finish, and it was completely pain-free. I even remember thinking at one point: “Is he about to start?”—only to hear the surgeon say, “All done.”

Did you have any misconceptions, and how did this relate to your actual experience?

The only real misconception I had was about the procedure itself. I had never actually taken the time to read up on or watch how a vasectomy is performed.

I remember a moment not long before my operation, when my partner asked me how the procedure was done. I told her to Google it, and the next thing I knew, she was watching a video of the operation. Curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to watch it with her. What I saw made me feel sick to my stomach, and I seriously considered cancelling my appointment.

I spoke with one of the vasectomy team about what I had seen. They explained that the video showed an outdated, more invasive version of the procedure. They took the time to sit me down and thoroughly explain how MSI UK performs the procedure today, which is far less invasive. This conversation really put my mind at ease and reassured me that I was making the right decision.

When did you learn about vasectomy and start to think about vasectomy as a method of contraception?

“It wasn’t fair to rely solely on my partner to handle contraception when I could take responsibility for it myself.”

I first learned about vasectomies during my teenage years, but like many young men, I was convinced I’d never go through with it. Back then, I saw it as something that might compromise my manhood. However, my perspective began to change as I grew older and more mature. My dad, whom I’ve always respected deeply, had one, and over time, several of my friends did as well. When my brother also decided to get a vasectomy, it made me realize that it wasn’t such a big deal after all.

It also became clear to me that it wasn’t fair to rely solely on my partner to handle contraception when I could take responsibility for it myself. This shift in mindset helped me see that getting a vasectomy was not only a practical choice but also a responsible one.

Is it something you would talk about with people in your life? Do you feel that vasectomy and contraception is talked about enough?

“I’ve found that being open about it has encouraged others to consider their own options or at least feel more comfortable talking about contraception.”

Yes, I’m definitely open to talking about my vasectomy with friends, family, and peers. In fact, I believe it’s an important conversation to have. Sharing my experience can help break down the stigma or misconceptions that some people might have about the procedure. It’s something I’ve already discussed with a few close friends, and I’ve found that being open about it has encouraged others to consider their own options or at least feel more comfortable talking about contraception.

As for whether vasectomy and contraception are talked about enough, I think there’s still room for improvement. While these topics are becoming less taboo, there’s a lot more we can do to normalize the conversation, especially among men. The more we talk about it, the more we can help others make informed decisions without feeling pressured or embarrassed.

Overall, I’m glad to contribute and encourage others to do the same.

Could you answer some of our most common FAQs on the procedure itself, from your own experience?

  1. Does the procedure hurt?   Nope, not at all, I believe I mentioned earlier in one of the conversations that I was wondering when the Dr was going to begin, only to find out that he had already finished.
  1. How long is your recovery?   This really depends on what you mean by recovery – in terms of all the bruising and swelling to go down, I would say it was around the 2-week mark.

What advice would you give to someone else considering a vasectomy?

“Don’t hesitate to ask questions or address any concerns you might have.”

If you’re considering a vasectomy, my advice would be to take your time to educate yourself about the procedure and have open conversations with your partner and healthcare professionals. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or address any concerns you might have—it’s important to feel fully informed and comfortable with your decision.

Remember that a vasectomy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure with a high success rate and a straightforward recovery process. It’s a responsible and effective option for long-term contraception, and many people, myself included, find peace of mind knowing they’ve taken control of their reproductive health.

Lastly, don’t let fear or misconceptions hold you back. Speak to others who have had the procedure, and you’ll likely find that it’s not as daunting as it might seem. In the end, it’s about doing what’s best for you and your family’s future.
