Commenting on the news that the government will make emergency hormonal contraception (the morning-after pill) available for free in pharmacies later this year, Louise McCudden, UK Head of External Affairs at MSI Reproductive Choices, said:

“We are delighted by the government’s announcement that the morning-after pill will be available for free in pharmacies later this year.

“As a leading reproductive healthcare provider, we know there are huge barriers to contraception access, especially in the poorest parts of the country.

“With over 45% of pregnancies unintended and many women denied timely access to long-acting contraception, this is an extremely sensible policy.

“While there is rarely just one isolated reason why someone has an abortion, we know that more people are doing so partly because accessing contraception is so difficult, at a time when the cost-of-living crisis makes it impractical to have more children than planned.”
